NOTES FROM OUR SUMMER SOCIALS
We BUUFs certainly know how to eat and chat! Our three socials (June, July and August) had perfect weather and excellent company. Getting to know each other personally, talking about unimportant things, talking about very important things, meeting new people – what could be better? We’ll be sure to have them again in the summer of 2013.

LUKE’S CORNER: “Institutions In Our Lives”
Strange how the institution of religion comes into play. Louise and I and several of our children went to a wedding reception in northern Indiana last month. It was at a large farm, more of an estate, owned by bride Michelle’s parents. They had set up a tent and provided a meal for about 250 attendees. Shortly before the buffet dinner was served, Steve, the groom, asked me if I would say a blessing before the meal. I replied, “Well, Steve, I can probably work something up, but in that I am an atheist it wouldn’t be much like a usual prayer before a meal.” Steve said, “That’s OK. Anything will do.” I said, “This is the way it will go,” and I recited our often-used UU blessing before meals. While I could tell he, as a fireman, was a little uncomfortable approving or disapproving blessings, he said it would be fine.
The happy couple had lived together for nine years. They raised Chiro, Michelle’s child by her previous marriage. I was probably the least religious, in the traditional sense, of anyone there, but I had this reputation, you know…
Michelle’s sister had a lovely ritual which included asking those gathered to promise their support to the young couple. The crowd responded with enthusiastic “I dos.” Then I was introduced simply. “Uncle Luke will now offer the blessing. And this is what I said:
It’s a blessing to be
It’s a blessing to be here
It’s a blessing to be here now
It’s a blessing to be here now together
And may there be many more blessings for Michelle and Steve and Chiro individually and together. If you agree, say, “Yea, Yea.”
Strange how institutions like religion and marriage are such an important part of our lives and relationships in spite of what we may say or feel about their value.
