CHINESE DIPLOMAT TO SPEAK AT BUUF
An Wei will show a movie and tell of his life at our May 8 BUUF meeting. Telling his story, he begins, “I was born and grew up in Anshang Village. I began to do farm work when I was eight years old. I did not leave this village until the age of 20 when I went to college. I was the first student in Anshang to do so. Afterwards I was able to go out into the outside world, travel to many countries, and see with my own eyes how other people work and live.”
An Wei rose to prominence in the government, but during the Cultural Revolution he was sent back to the farm. He gradually rose again in the government. When he retired at age 55, he turned down positions in a university and chose instead to see what he could do to improve the welfare of his home community. In a movie he will show how the people of Anshang developed a plan, wrested power from the local political party leader, and established a grass roots effort to make a better community. With the help of a Minnesota-based organization, Global Volunteers, the community built a school, an economically prosperous community, and much more.
Come join us for an interesting evening around an evolving China and our relationship to it. Maria Maki met An Wei several years ago when she led a group with Global Volunteers to Anshang to teach English in the school.

LUKE’S CORNER – What’s Really Going On Here?
By Luke Markve
Maybe it started early when I asked my mom, “Where do babies come from?” After she finished telling me the whole story, I said, “I don’t believe you,” and walked away.
It seems that from an early age, I was unconsciously asking, “What’s really going on here? How did this come to be?”
On April 2, I walked into Wright County Collision to talk about my car door problem. Neil, the owner, was talking to one of his workers. He looked startled as he turned around and exclaimed, “We were just talking about you. Were your ears burning?” As we walked to his office, I said, “No. But these things happen to me often.”
The bee doesn’t stop at every flower. What’s going on here? The answer is in a new study which showed that bees give off a positive electrical field and nectar gives off a negative electrical field. If there is no more nectar in the flower, there is no longer a negative electrical field to attract the bee. The bee will not waste time trying to get nectar out of that flower. We always thought it was based on color, smell and good luck.
When coincidences occur, the answer may be in degrees of probability or the cycles of the moon, or the movement of sub-atomic particles, or something we hadn’t expected.
Just as I arrived home, I wondered about a friend, and his friend Greg, and Greg’s medical tests. As I walked in, the phone rang. My friend was calling about Greg. He began with, “I had to call and tell you about Greg’s test results.” Had I sent an electrical impulse? Was it statistical probability? Was it the moon? Was it sub-atomic particles? Or, something else? Maybe more research may tell me what’s really going on here!

BABY ANIMAL FAIR
Thank you to the BUUF members who staffed our Ecology booth at the Baby Animal fair on Sunday, April 21: Jim Gabrielson, Maria Maki, Louise Markve, Luke Markve, Marie Smith. The weather was cold and dreary, so the indoor fair was very well attended. We were able to display some of our literature and speak with people who inquired about Unitarian Universalism.

KENTUCKY WOMAN ORDAINED AS PRIEST IN DEFIANCE
OF ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH
Excerpts from Yahoo News
Rosemarie Smead, a former Carmelite nun, was ordained a priest as part of a dissident group operating outside of the official Roman Catholic Church rules. She is one of about 150 women around the world who have decided not to wait for the church to lift its ban on women priests, but to be ordained and start their own congregations.
In an interview before the ceremony, Smead said she is not worried about being excommunicated from the church – the fate of other women ordained outside of Vatican law. “It has no sting for me,” said Smead. “It is a medieval bullying stick the bishops used to keep control over people and to keep the voices of women silent. I am way beyond letting octogenarian men tell us how to live our lives.”
During the ordination ceremony, Smead and other women priests lifted the plates and cups containing the sacramental bread and wine to bless them. A woman in the congregation murmured, “Girl, lift those plates. I’ve been waiting a long time for this.”
